On the trail again – AT – Maine 7/17/2021

For the first time since finishing my thru hike of Te Araroa, I’ll be properly on the trail tomorrow. I’ve done a couple hikes in NZ, Germany and New England since finishing, but this will be my next thru hike, even if it’s not a complete thru hike. I’ve decided to hike from Gorham, NH to Baxter, ME. The last 298 miles (480 km) of the AT, which includes Mahoosuc Notch and the 100 mile wilderness, both of which are tricky to do because they are rather remote, and both are hikes I’ve wanted to do for a long time. https://www.mountainiq.com/guides/appalachian-trail/maine/

I’m nervous and excited. In some ways I wonder if I’m chasing the dream of my memories of NZ (my first thru hike), as if I wish I could experience that all again, I wish I could take those same people with me. I only hope I can let go of my expectations and enjoy this experience for what it is, instead of what I want it to be.

I was planning on taking the bus from Boston to Gorham, NH, which leaves every day at 4:30 PM and gets to NH after 8 PM. At the last moment my friend Kristen offered to hike the first 10 miles with me (making a 13 mile loop back to her car). That means I’ll get on the trail a day earlier than expected, but more importantly I’ll start with a close friend, which makes the whole experience seem much less intimidating.

Silly fact: I’m very exited about having chicken and salmon packets instead of only tuna… even if it’s just for the first section.
