P2, Hiking Day 1 Lescun to Candanchu

We woke up earlyish, ate breakfast and got hiking around 8, it was a beautiful day and we headed straight up from the valley to the ridge in good time.

Once we got up higher the views just got better and better! Every corner seemed to reveal a new mountain vista. The areas were mostly through high farmland so we met lots of sheep and cows. We lunched with a nice view and headed on to the Refugio where we planned to stay. When we got there it was only 2:30, the Refugio was under construction and not open and there was a big bunch of guys camping there, so we opened our map and looked at how far it would be to go to Candanchu, and it didn’t look that far, having a signal we decided to get a room at a hotel and walk to town. Well it was further than we thought… about 18.5 km.

The hike got tough, not because it was that hard, but just because the day was so long. Up and down and up and down. I really thought it would be mostly downhill to town. We crossed a river and then an uphill road walk which was made a little less terrible because at least there were almost no cars. A fun bus stop told us that town was a quick ride on the bus, however it only stopped there at 11 AM, there was also a number for a taxi, and we had no signal. The last couple kilometers were really tough, very sore and hungry (we had plenty of snacks but we didn’t want to eat them).
We got tot the hotel at 8:30, checked in and showered and went out to a bar to eat because nothing else in town was open. It was an amazing meal… I really think just because we were starving, but they spoke English and it was good. We looked at the book and apparently it was roughly a 35 km day and was supposed to be two days, no wonder we were exhausted!
