Day 13 – Alpine Wandering

For breakfast we had another experiment, trail pancakes, the are more like bars than pancakes with raisins, walnuts, cranberries, oats and almond meal in them, but cooked like pancakes and serves with maple syrup. Then we packed a little, but let camp and headed up the next pass to the east on the HRP. The route includes a small glacier or snowfield, we put on microspikes and played around a bit (Betty’s first time wearing them).

At the top we found a spot sheltered from the wind looking down into the next valley and had lunch.

The trip down was fast and mostly easy. When we got down we had a coffee and hot chocolate at the hut before breaking camp.

From there we took a slightly higher route back, then took a side trail to see another lake. that side trail had a narrow path with a loooong drop, too much for my fear of heights (roughly 350 meters or 1,1478 feet), to top it off we weren’t sure there was a connecting path, so there was a chance we would have had to comeback that way. we turned back before the drop, but on out way back found a great place to make camp, even if it was a little early.

Clouds came and went again offering us some views, then back to fog. We made Thai curry again except this time we let the tofu and broccoli sit in water a bit before cooking, and sure enough that took the intensity out of the tofu.

We got into the tent as it was cold and there were no views, but then suddenly it all opened up again and the entire valley was undercast, all we could see was the higher peaks and an ocean of clouds.
