Day 41 – day one of the Whanganui River canoe trip

Robin, Amber, Malween, Lucas and myself set out in pirate masks armed with squirt guns and flying a makeshift pirate flag from Taumarunui. The idea is to surprise Audrey, James, Alex and Will. To add the the surprise Amber told them she wouldn’t be able to make the canoe trip.

Amber had her mask packed away the first day

There were some class one rapids, which were a lot of fun. We practiced our piracy tactics on other boaters, which seemed to amuse them, it certainly amused us.

The river was swollen from the rain yesterday and made paddling quick and easy. We had great weather and the scenery was breathtaking. During some of the slower parts we paddled lightly or sometimes not at all and just enjoyed the scenery. Robin and I seem to have a similar love for nature and solitude, which makes him easy to travel with

We made camp at Poukaria, we were the first to arrive so we got first pick of sites, I found a nice mossy spot in the trees to put up my hammock which makes me happy. It was a great first day on the river!
