Day 24 – Forced zero – 11/17

Forced to take a zero because the post office isn’t open on Sundays. I spent the day with Dave and Alison, we ran some errands, some of theirs and some of mine. Icebreaker actually replaced my socks that got a hole in them for free! I also picked up another pair for a total of three pair, and a heavier wool shirt and a small camp towel (my ultralight one was ok, but I decided that was worth the weight) and soap to replace the one I lost somewhere.

Dave said he would take me out surfing, but the surf was crap. Then we decided to try paddleboarding, but the wind kicked up. Instead we visited a couple places around Auckland. Maungawhau/Mount Eden was a particular favorite, it’s a dormant volcano just on the edge of town with a spectacular view of Auckland and both coasts.

We talked about people and philosophy and politics, Dave swears like a New Yorker, which cracks me up. I got to learn a lot about Māori culture and beliefs. It was an amazing experience! I’m so grateful to them for taking me into their home.

I’m sure there are plenty of exceptions, but I’m really amazed at how friendly, kind and helpful Kiwis are.
