The famous pancakes were deserving of the title, raspberries, blueberries and apples inside, served (optionally) with eggs and sausage for just $12, and it includes a cup of coffee with refills. It was a lot of food, I was very close to finishing, but couldn’t quite manage it all.
We went back to camp after to pack up, Beast aimed to leave a little later as usual so I got moving.
The trail followed the river from the pond down a series of cascades and waterfalls for about 4 miles before joining the Kennebec River. It’s not advised to cross the Kennebec river because there’s a damn upstream that doesn’t release on a schedule and can be dangerous. So instead there’s a guy with a canoe who ferries hikers across the river.
Caratunk is a small town… I mean a really small town. There is a post office (and that’s about all) and by the post office there’s a phone you can use to call the Sterling hotel, who will come and pick you up and you can resupply there and get a shower even if you aren’t staying overnight. I did my resupply, took a shower, called Betty, and ate a pizza before heading back to the trail and hiking another 5 miles to Pleasant Pond, which is much less remote than I thought it would be, lots of boats and lake houses dotting the shore, however it’s still beautiful.
I barely managed to drag my ass out of bed to take star pictures, but I was glad I did! I got to see a couple shooting stars as well as the Milky Way.
