Day 13 – a rainy day?

The last forecast I saw said rain starting in the evening the day before and going all night and most of the next day.

It rained hard last night. I kept waking up and checking to see that things weren’t wet, and every time everything was dry.

In the morning the rain was light but has mostly stopped. We hung around for a nut expecting it to pick up again but it didn’t. We knew it was only a 10 mile day and there wasn’t much difficult terrain so we took out time and had a couple cups of coffee and ate a bit and hung out.

Eventually the sun peaked through the clouds here and there. I don’t know what happened to the rain, I guess we just got lucky.

The terrain was easy as expected, mostly green tunnel, up and down a couple hills.

I got to East carry pond and the weather was just amazing, mostly sunny with some beautiful clouds, and wind coming from the north, which was luckily being blocked by the trees. As soon and I got to the pond I went for a swim, then sat on the shore in the sun drying off. Beast wasn’t far behind me and as soon as she got there she decided to go for a swim, so of course I had to go in again. We had lunch there and spent some time just enjoying the beautiful day that was supposed to be a rainy day.

Uncharacteristically we hiked from there together, usually Beast and I hike alone together and just take breaks, but we had some good conversations and the last couple miles went really fast.

When we got to camp we grabbed a snack and hung around in our hammocks (she carries a light lounging hammock, but sleeps in a tent).

Then we went up to Harrison’s Pierce pond camp to make a reservation for the famous pancake breakfast tomorrow. I’ve seriously heard SOBO hikers talk about this breakfast this whole trip, they have several kinds of fruit in them and are supposedly amazing. We made our reservation and the owner invited us to have some lemonade and hang around, so we sat out on the back porch watching at least half a dozen hummingbirds fight for space at a couple feeders just a couple feet away from us. It was incredible.

I took a walk to try and catch sunset, but the clouds had other plans.

The wind is crazy tonight. I closed my tarp doors just to block it and tried to attach my poncho to the bottom of my hammock to block the wind so it doesn’t steal all the heat out of my underquilt. So far it seems to be working, but I have a feeling I might not sleep that well tonight. I’m sure even if I don’t the pancakes will make it all better in the morning.
