Day 125 – Roses hut to Arrowtown

The forecast said the morning would be nice and the afternoon would be windy and rainy. A strange thing happened, the forecast was accurate!

The day started perfect, a little cloud cover so things weren’t too hot going up the first saddle.

Sunrise from the hut

Once at the top it cleared giving great views, however it was very windy!

Then we descended the other side to a river. We had the option to take the river track, which means crossing the river a million times, or the high water track, which goes up and down above the river and is overgrown. I opted for the river, although it seems like they were about the same speed from the timing of the people who went the other way.

That brought us to Macetown, an abandoned mining town that still has some historic buildings. We got lunch there and headed up the last saddle before descending to Arrowtown. That’s when the rain came in, not a terrible downpour or anything, in fact the wind was the worst part. I was glad I made it through the last couple saddles the day before when the wind wasn’t as bad!

Sadly Arrowtown had no accommodation available except for camping. So we camped and went out for pizza at a place that had half price pizza before 6 (which we barely made before it went to full price).

It cleared up on the other side
