Day 49 – Day 2 hiking around Mt Taranaki – Fanthams peak

It was a short day, we started just after 7 and stopped at Dawson Falls for coffee at 9.

View from the cafe

The trail from there started going up. Then it REALLY started going up. I think we gained 400 meters in about 1 km (which is more than 1,000 feet in less than a mile). To top it off it was a ton at loose scree that just slipped away under foot.

I made it to the Syme hut at about 12:15, Amber around 1:00 and Robin, who stopped for lunch and a nap before going up, closer to 2:00.

When I got to the top there were almost no clouds and it was an amazing view! Sadly by the time Robin got there everything was in a cloud.

Luckily as the day went on things cleared up and the amazing views returned. Sunset was beautiful, from here we can see Wellington and part of the north island, it’s fun to think I’ll be there soon!
