Day 17 – just when you think you’re done with Long Beach walks

Took a quick water taxi across Whangarei Harbour then started hiking south 16 km on the beach. Forecast was questionable, mixed rain and sun, but it ended up much better than we expected.

We tried to take a shortcut across a river, but that didn’t work, so we had to hike up stream a little to cross. It was above the knee but below the waist at the official crossing spot, so not bad.

A little more on the beach then a road walk… oh the feet were not happy about that much impact!

Another hiker wrote this at the 400 km point

Made it to McLeod’s pizza and brewery in Waipu, nom! Then we hitched to camp Waipu cove.

412 km, 21 km today but tough on the feet.

That night some serious thunderstorms rolled through, the kind where you can feel the thunder through your body. I was glad we opted to get a cabin instead of camping.
