Day 12 – Lac d’Oô to Lac de Portillon

We started in Lourdes, and drove for over and hour to the trail head, which was very crowded, not surprising, it’s a popular trail and it’s Sunday. We hiked quickly up to Lac d’Oô, stopping at the Refugio there for a sparkling water (too hot for coffee and wasn’t feeling beer). Then on to Lac d’Espingo where we had a fun lunch of cheese and fruit that we brought from town as well as a couple raspberries we picked on the way up.

After that lake the crowd thinned quite a bit and there was a lot more uphill.

We made it to Lac de Portillon rather early, I think around 4:30. I was keeping a couple places to camp in mind down lower in case we didn’t find anything we hiked up high, but there was a great site at the lake and we decided to camp there. For a while we just watched the clouds, it was a beautiful day but the lake kept getting overrun by clouds, then clearing, then cloudy again.

Eventually we made dinner, my second attempt at fancier backcountry meals. We had Thai green curry tofu with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, green beans, zucchini, ginger, carrots, fried onions, and rice. I was really pleased with the results, the biggest thing I’d say I would have done different is putting less flavor in the tofu (which I cooked with fish sauce, lime and a little brown sugar before drying. They were tasty but a little overpowering. I could have alternately soaked them a bit before adding them in. Either way a successful experiment.
