Day 123 – Wanaka to Fern Burn Hut – 2/25

We started late, Jayden was staying out of town and walking in that morning, so we took our time repacking groceries and showering. Then after Jayden showed up we went out for coffee and breakfast ice cream. After that Holger had to ship his bounce box (looks like I could have actually sent a bounce box here after all) and talk to the airlines about changing his flight which got canceled because it was going through China and with the corona virus outbreak, New Zealand is stopping those flights.

Jayden and I started around the lake while Holger sorted his things. The walk was easy and nice. We got to the campsite right at the otter side of the lake and got more ice cream, which at this point is was more because of the heat, as well as just being delicious. As I was eating my ice cream Holger pulls up in a van, apparently he was walking hut because it took so long to sort out the airline stuff he decided to hitch part so he would make it to the hut in daylight.

From the lake there was a short road walk to the trailhead, then we followed a stream up to the hut. There weren’t many views at first, but then the trail started going up and it got real nice… although we had to earn it!
