Day 83 – Richmond range day four- Tarn hut to Top Wairoa hut

Morning at the tarn was quite nice, although it was overcast there was a lot of mist.

Quickly the sun burned through the clouds for a perfectly clear day. The first part of the hike to the Mid Wairoa hut was uneventful, but the hut has an amazing swimming hole that’s a beautiful sapphire color, unfortunately it also has a ton of sandflies. I went for a dip but kept it quick.

The next section of trail was both wonderful and horrible. The trail followed the river from the last hut and there were tons of beautiful pools and waterfalls. The trail also had some of the sketchiest drops I’ve seen on a trail. Many times I was holding roots or rocks just so I didn’t fall 30 feet down to the river.

I made it to the hut around 3:30 and has some time to relax and go over the possibilities for the next day.

The hut is in a great location, sitting up on a hill between where two rivers meet and at the foot of the red hills.
