Day 104 – all the river crossings! – Hamilton hut to Harper campsite- 2/6/20

There was a small side hike to a tarn called mirror tarn, one of the guys at the hut, Flo 🇳🇿, said it wasn’t worth it, but I thought I’d give it a look anyway. Turns out yesterday it was too windy and didn’t look great, but today was beautiful.

The trail followed the Harper river, crossing it over and over again, there was no chance of keeping my feet dry, so I just jumped right in!

This rock formation is called the Pinnacles, I thought about exploring it more, but decided it was already far enough to walk in a day so skipped it.

Eventually the river got bigger and merged with another river which was cloudy and tough to cross, partly just because you can’t see how deep it is until you try to cross, and even then you have to feel your way across. Luckily where we crossed was above the knee, but not quite waist deep.

After that it was a gravel road up to the campsite and a quick walk to lake Coleridge. Flow and Hunter 🇳🇿took a swim, it looked nice but was a bit cold for my taste and the wind was blowing all sorts of debris down to the end of the lake where we were. I’m guessing that’s why the other side of the lake is more popular.
